NASA Images Reveal Massive 'Burn Scar' Created By Deadly Valley Fire
LAKE COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Newly-released images from NASA reveal in graphic detail the massive devastation of the deadly Valley Fire that has burned 76,067 acres in Northern California.
The Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8 captured a false-color view of the charred landscape as of September 20. The burn scars around Middletown show the extent to which the small town was surrounded by fire.
The image is collected with short-wave infrared and near-infrared bands.
According to Cal Fire, the blaze was 85% contained as of Thursday morning.
The dark orange areas are newly burned land. The unburned land appears as gray. Buildings that are still standing are white. More than 3000 homes were destroyed in the blaze.
