San Francisco Cable Car Operator Hit, Critically Injured By Passing Car While Offloading Passengers

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)-- A San Francisco Muni cable car driver was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries Monday morning following an accident where they were struck by a car.

Officials said it happened on the Powell Cable Car between Washington and Jackson streets in Nob Hill at about 10:35 a.m.

The 53-year-old conductor, who was later taken to San Francisco General Hospital, was helping passengers get off the cable car when he was hit by a passing vehicle.

The conductor suffered a broken leg, broken ribs and bleeding to the liver and is expected to be hospitalized for at least a week. Police classified the injuries as life-threatening, but a Muni spokesman said the conductor is expected to survive.

The 42-year-old man driving the minivan stopped at the scene.

Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza today said he did not know whether the driver will face a citation for the crash.
