Injury Crash On Westbound I-80 Snarls Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- An injury collision involving two cars and a motorcycle on westbound I-80 just east of the 5th Street exit briefly shut down the freeway, creating a massive back-up on the Bay Bridge, according to authorities.

The accident reportedly involved a motorcycle and at least two cars happened just after 12 p.m. before the 5th Street off ramp. At least one person was reported down on the roadway.

Multiple emergency units responded to the scene. Video tweeted out by the Marin County News showed a motorcycle flipped over with its wheels up as paramedics tend to a crash victim on a stretcher.

The three left lanes were initially blocked due to the collision. Later, all lanes of I-80 were shut down and traffic is diverted off the freeway at the Fremont and Harrison exits.

CHP later reported that it appeared the motorcyclist may have collided with the vehicles as they were stopped in front of him on I-80.

The victim has not been identified, but CHP confirmed he was male and born in 1984.  The victim was transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities later opened the two far right lanes of 80 to traffic and eventually reopened all lanes shortly after 1 p.m., but the damage was already done.

Chopper 5 video showed a massive back-up of traffic on the Bay Bridge inbound to San Francisco due to the detour. Traffic was made worse by the influx of people driving to Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes.
