Mountain View Pizzeria Using Robots, High-Tech Truck To Cook Pies On The Road

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KPIX 5) -- A Mountain View pizzeria is putting a high-tech spin on slinging pies.

It's not your parent's pizzeria for sure.

"What we have is robots and humans working collaboratively," Zume Pizza Co-Founder Julia Collins said. Zume is taking a page right out of Silicon Valley's playbook by using advanced robotics, high-tech computers, and some of smartest humans around to make your favorite slice of pizza.

We're using the next generation of automation - highly intelligent, highly flexible robots - to actually facilitate the food preparation process," Collins said.

And now, the company that launched in April is looking to change the way that pizza is cooked and delivered.

They're equipping a delivery truck with more than 50 small ovens, and a sophisticated computer system that will cook the pizzas as they're being driven to their destination.

"Pizza ordering is highly predictable. Most of our customers order in a habitual way. So, what we can do is use artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict what orders are likely to come in and what we need to have on the truck," Collins said.

Collins says automation makes the process faster and cheaper, and allows them to invest in higher quality ingredients, which they're hoping is a recipe for success.
