Mountain Lion Attacks 6-Year-Old Boy Near Cupertino Winery

CUPERTINO (CBS SF) -- Authorities suspended a search for a mountain lion in Cupertino that sent a 6-year-old boy to the hospital Sunday afternoon, according to Santa Clara County Sgt. Curtis Stenderup.

The animal's attack was reported around 1:15 p.m. on Montebello Road -- a hiking trail about 2 miles from Pichetti Winery.

Stenderup said that officials with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, as well as sheriff's deputies have closed all hiking trails in the area and established a perimeter.

The boy was attacked, and dragged by the cat before family members scared it away.

The child suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his neck and back.

A game warden said authorities would continue searching for the animal Monday after the search was called off at sunset Sunday.  If caught, the animal will be euthanized so it can be tested for rabies.
