McCartney, Montana Among Stars In Series Of Final Candlestick Park Events

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Sir Paul McCartney's Candlestick Park farewell concert is one of a series of final events at the 54-year-old stadium that will include a gathering of 49ers legends.

49ers Hall-of-Famers Joe Montana and Jerry Rice will return to the scene of some of their greatest triumphs when they and fellow 49er greats Roger Craig, Dwight Clark and others play a flag-football game on July 12.

The 49er Legends team will play against a team of former NFL stars led by Hall-of-Fame quarterback and former Miami Dolphin Dan Marino. Tickets for the final football game at Candlestick reportedly go on sale May 10.

That game will be part of a double-header, coming after a game between the San Francisco police and fire departments.

Prior to that, the U.S. men's soccer team will play a World Cup tune-up match against Azerbaijan on May 27.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department Thursday announced the McCartney show on August 14th will be the last public event at the "Stick."

Still to be determined is the date for the "community open house" where nostalgic fans will be able to say goodbye to the site which hosted eight NFC Championship games, two World Series, two MLB All-Star Games, and untold numbers of iconic moments.

The open house event will be "where people will have the opportunity to come and visit the stadium, get on the field, take some tours of the stadium, a big fanfest," said Phil Ginsburg, SF Rec and Park General Manager.

The Rec & Park Department will then transfer the stadium to Lennar Development at the end of the year, which will demolish the stadium to make way for a development project featuring housing, retail, and entertainment venues.

Candlestick Park was built as an open-ended, baseball-only stadium in 1960; later expanded and enclosed in 1969 to accommodate the 49ers.
