SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY (CBS SF) -- A sinkhole on the I-5 south of Tracy has as shut down all northbound lanes of the major California freeway, according to officials.

All northbound lanes are shut down along I-5 in San Joaquin County, causing major traffic along one of the state's main arteries.

Crews were making repairs to the road Tuesday morning when the sinkhole opened up.

The hole is on I-5 south of Tracy near Highway 132. Traffic is being diverted onto northbound Highway 33 through Modesto before returning to northbound I-5.

The sinkhole started out just one foot in diameter, but has since grown big enough to cover parts of three freeway lanes.

The closures began around 12 p.m.

According to officials, all the lanes won't re-open until Thursday afternoon.
