Massive Apple Campus In North San Jose Approved

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – Apple has received the green light from San Jose officials to construct a massive office complex near Mineta International Airport.

The council voted unanimously to approve Apple's plans to move into an 86-acre lot near Highways 101 and 87, along First Street and Component Drive.

Apple Forecasts Rare Drop In Sales; 1st In 13 Years

As part of the agreement, Apple can grow and develop the site for the next 15 years. Apple could build up to 4.15 million square feet of space for offices, research and development, which would make it bigger than their current headquarters in Cupertino. Up to 20,000 employees could work at the complex.

The company has also agreed to pay millions of dollars in fees to ease traffic congestion.

"It's great to have Apple in San Jose. It's really a validation of what we've known for many years now, which is that San Jose continues to be the heart of Silicon Valley," Mayor Sam Liccardo told KPIX 5. "We've got great opportunities to continue to have fast-scaling companies come to San Jose, if we're able to get out of the way and really take advantage of those opportunities."

There are several existing buildings on the lot. As many as a thousand employees could move to the North San Jose location within a few months.
