Man Killed In Downtown Walnut Creek Shooting; Suspect At Large

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- A Bay Area man died early Saturday morning after he was allegedly gunned down in downtown Walnut Creek, according to police.

The shooting was first reported at 1:28 a.m. near Locust and Cypress streets, police said.

Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to John Muir Medical Center, where he later died, according to police.

The victim, identified as Courtney Brown, 38, was with a group of friends at Crogan's sports bar around closing time, according to police.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

Witnesses told police they saw a black male who they believed to be the shooter, approximately 6 feet tall, running from the scene. Police say the suspect was last seen heading toward California Blvd.

"Walnut Creek police detectives are following up on multiple leads and this is an extremely active investigation," Lt. Tom Cashion told KPIX.

Police believe the incident is an isolated one and doesn't indicate a pattern of violence in the city.

The victim was from the Bay Area and leaves behind a daughter and a fiancée.
