Homeowner Shot In Gunfire Exchange During San Leandro Home Invasion; Robber Leaves Blood Trail

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A group of men involved in a home invasion robbery escaped after shooting the homeowner in San Leandro early Thursday morning.

The homeowner was hospitalized with critical, but non life-threatening injuries. At least one of the robbers left a trail of blood as he fled.

The attempted robbery and shooting happened just after midnight on Lakeview Drive.

At around 12:45 a.m. police say at least two men broke into the house apparently trying to pull off a home invasion robbery.

The husband and wife both in their 60's were home at the time. Police say the husband opened fire on the suspects and a shootout ensued, in which the husband was shot.

"The male victim did have a weapon in the house," said Lt. Mike Sobek. "He did return fire. Not sure if he shot first or what happened."

The neighborhood was asked to shelter in place as a large contingency of SWAT officers searched the neighborhood for at least four suspects.

The shelter in place has since been lifted.

Police described the suspects as two men in their early 20s.
