Man Dies While In Police Custody After Santa Rosa Bicycle Chase
SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- A man died of an apparent medical emergency while in police custody after leading officers on a brief chase on his bicycle in Santa Rosa early Sunday morning, police said.
Police said a Santa Rosa police officer attempted to stop the cyclist for a traffic violation near Sucher Lane and Nordyke Avenue near Santa Rosa Junior College at about 1:03 a.m.
The suspect failed to yield, prompting a short pursuit with additional officers responding to assist.
After a brief struggle, officers took the man into custody.
Police said a short time after he was taken into custody, the suspect "suffered what appeared to be a medical emergency."
The officers requested medical aid and began to administer CPR and other life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived.
The man was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
His name has not been released.
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department and the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office will investigate the incident, following standard protocol in the event of an officer-involved death.
