Man Dies After Tunnel In Sand Collapses On Half Moon Bay Beach

HALF MOON BAY (CBS SF) -- A man died on a Half Moon Bay beach after a tunnel he was digging collapsed, burying him under four feet of sand Monday night.

The victim, identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as Adam Jay Pye, of San Lorenzo, had been digging angled tunnels in the sand with friends or family members, according to Cal Fire Capt. Jonathan Cox.

Pye was standing in a 10-foot hole when it collapsed on him at 5:28 p.m., covering him completely in sand, Cox said.

It took emergency responders and bystanders over thirty minutes of digging to free Pye from the sand.

Paramedics attempted to revive Pye, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
