Man Arrested In Fatal Stabbing Of Homeless War Veteran In Richmond
RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- Police on Tuesday arrested a Richmond man in the stabbing death of an Afghanistan war veteran in Richmond last Friday, a police sergeant said.
Mark Nelson, 50, was arrested around 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Sea Horse Motel, located at 909 Cutting Blvd., on a warrant for the killing of 45-year-old Richmond resident Lakota Brightman, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
An officer reviewing video surveillance footage of the stabbing recognized Nelson from prior interactions with him, according to police.
Officers in the department's special investigations section were able to find Nelson at the motel, where he was arrested without incident, police said.
Police responded around 10 p.m. Friday to a report of a stabbing outside a market in the 1400 block of Carlson Boulevard, Abetkov said.
Brightman and Nelson got into an argument and Nelson allegedly stabbed Brightman once in the upper left side of his chest, according to Abetkov. He was transported to a hospital, where he died, she said.
Brightman is the son of an activist with the United Native Americans, Inc., an American Indians advocacy group that formed in San Francisco in 1968, according to the group's website and Brightman's brother, Quanah Brightman.
Lakota Brightman served in the U.S. Army as a field medic and had been homeless for more than a year before his death, Quanah Brightman said.
He is survived by two daughters, ages 23 and 13, according to his brother.
