Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Los Angeles Area
LOS ANGELES (CBS SF) -- A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the Los Angeles area Friday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Seismologists at the USGS said the earthquake struck around 9:09 p.m. near La Habra, about 20 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, at a depth of 1.2 miles. The quake struck about an hour after a magnitude 3.6 earthquake shook the same area.
The quake was felt throughout Southern California, from San Diego to Ventura County, according to citizen responses on the USGS website. KCBS-TV in Los Angeles said significant shaking was felt for 20 seconds in the Studio City area, about 40 miles from the epicenter.
The quake occurred during the sixth inning of a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Angels at Dodger Stadium. While the quake was felt at the stadium, the game was not interrupted.
Several gas leaks and water main breaks were reported following the quake. There are no reports of injuries as of late Friday night.
At Disneyland in Anaheim, a few miles from the epicenter, all rides were stopped temporarily as a precaution.
Several aftershocks have been felt in the region following the magnitude 5.1 quake. A magnitude 3.4 aftershock struck around 9:12 p.m., while a magnitude 3.6 aftershock struck at 9:30 p.m.
Friday's earthquakes come less than two weeks after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake woke up the Los Angeles area on the morning of March 17th.
"This earthquake was probably about 10 times larger, in terms of energy released, than the one two weeks ago," said Lucy Jones of the USGS and Caltech.
