Driver Leads CHP On Low-Speed Chase From Menlo Park To Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A 28-year-old Berkeley man was arrested after a pursuit from Menlo Park to the Oakland hills early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 3:25 a.m., Oakland CHP officers took over a pursuit initially started by Menlo Park police involving a black Toyota Avalon.
CHP officers and police successfully deployed a spike strip to flatten some of the tires on the Toyota, but the driver, later identified as Abdul Henan Zahid, continued driving north on Interstate Highway 880, CHP officials said.
Officers pursued the vehicle at low speeds on city streets and highways for more than 90 minutes. At about 5:15 a.m., the Toyota finally came to a stop in the Oakland hills where Tunnel Road becomes Skyline Boulevard near the Caldecott Tunnel, according to the CHP.
The vehicle then began to catch fire but Zahid refused to get out. Officers then used a bean bag shotgun to break open a window, but the suspect still did not exit. A police K-9 then was used to apprehend Zahid and get him out of the car, CHP officials said.
Zahid was arrested on suspicion of offenses including driving under the influence and evading police, according to the CHP.
