Laura Benanti's "Melania" Accidentally Endorses Hillary Clinton On Colbert

By Rachel McRady

(CBS NEWS) – Melania Trump has been making the rounds since her husband, Donald Trump's leaked 2005 "Access Hollywood" tape caused a stir. Though the GOP candidate's wife did not make an appearance on "The Late Show" on Tuesday, host Stephen Colbert managed to get the next-best thing -- actress Laura Benanti reprising her Melania impression.

"I want you to know we are completely alone," Benanti as Melania began, clearly looking off camera at someone. "There is no one else in the room coaching me."

Colbert pointed out that Melania hadn't spoken out much since her Republican National Convention speech was criticized for copying a 2008 speech from Michelle Obama.

Melania Trump Blames Everyone But Donald For His Locker Room Talk by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on YouTube

"That is my choice. They did not send me to live in an undisclosed location," she joked.

When Colbert tried to bring up the controversial audio, Melania interrupted him, saying, "We need to focus on important issues facing our nation like how the election is rigged," blaming, "The left wing media, international bankers and Billy Bush."

But she did say that she blamed her husband, Donald, for his lewd comments about women.

"I said to my husband that those words are very inappropriate. Plus, he said them on a bus, disgusting," she said. "This is not the man I married."

Ultimately, the fake Melania doesn't think the tape is as big of a deal as everyone else is making it out to be.

"He explained it was locker room talk. I did not know this, but when American men gather to sport they always brag of grabbing women by the Billy Bush," she said. And when Colbert brought up the allegations of sexual assault against the Donald, she added, "Those are all lies, Stephen, except the ones where there's video tape, those are locker room talk."

Melania's final words were the most outrageous, when she said, "It's boy talk. Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do? Boys, men, it's the same. No matter how nice they seem, secretly they're all foul-mouthed Billy Bush-grabbing pigs. I'm talking about your husband, your brother, the Pope, Luke Skywalker, all of them. They're all animals. If only a woman could be president!"

Of course, when Colbert brought up Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Melania quickly ended the call.
