Emergency Pothole Repairs Cause Gridlock On Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- All eastbound lanes on Interstate 80 are now open on the Bay Bridge following emergency pothole repairs, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes on the western span of the bridge were closed after a large pothole was discovered Wednesday evening, according to Caltrans spokesman Andrew Gordon.

The pothole, which is around two feet long and half a foot wide, opened up somewhere in the late afternoon or early evening, Gordon said.

The emergency repairs were necessary because it is big enough to cause problems for motorcycles, Gordon said.

The emergency closure was reported just after 7 p.m.

Gordon did not know the cause of the pothole.

Traffic coming out of San Francisco remains heavy as of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the CHP.
