Labor Day Weekend BART Riders Coping During Transbay Tube Closure
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5 ) -- Some of BART's estimated 80,000 weekend riders are taking the bus since the transit agency closed the Transbay Tube for maintenance, repairs and upgrades.
Victoria Moore left early from Pittsburg to get to her job in San Francisco.
"This is an inconvenience, yes, but they do what they can. I'd rather have upgrades and be safe than unsafe," she said.
BART is running limited bus service between San Francisco's Transbay Terminal and Oakland.
It's getting help from other bus agencies like AC Transit, MUNI and Golden Gate Transit.
BART says ridership is down 40% over last Labor Day weekend.
"All things considered, going pretty welll, but still advising people to budget 30 minutes to an hour for their trip over the Bay Bridge," said BART spokesperson Taylor Huckaby. "You never know what will happen with traffic, especially if you're using the airport."
BART says your best bet is staying close to home if you can.
The plan is to re-open the Transbay Tube Tuesday at 4 a.m.
