Junipero Serra H.S. Football Team Banned 2 Years From Playoffs For Not Playing Consolation Game

SAN MATEO (KCBS)— A decision to not play in a consolation football game has landed one of the Bay Area's top high schools some stiff penalties.

Junipero Serra in San Mateo is being booted from Central Coast Section playoff games for two years.

Last month the school decided to turn down the offer of a consolation game against Milpitas. In addition to being ineligible for playoffs games, the school must pay restitution of more than $6,000.

The CCS commissioner said the school failed to fulfill its commitments to its opponents. Serra's Head Coach Patrick Walsh said he stands by his decision to bow out of the consolation game and said he was concerned about putting players at risk of injury.

Serra will have an opportunity to appeal the ruling handed down by the CCS.
