#JeSuisNice: Outpouring Of Sympathy, Impromptu Vigil In SF For Victims Of Nice Attack
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The deadly Bastille Day attack in Nice, France has sent shock waves around the world, setting off an outpouring of sympathy and an impromptu vigil in San Franciso.
At least 80 people were killed and scores injured when a truck driver plowed into a crowd of revelers gathered on the Promenade des Anglais. It happened during the fireworks display.
In a matter of minutes, word spread of the horrendous attack, and the hashtag #PrayForNice peppered posts all across social media. Users once again tinted their thumbnails in bleu, blanc, et rouge-- the colors of the French flag -- in solidarity with the victims.
The vigil was called for 9 p.m. in front of the French Consulat of San Francisco located at 88 Kearny Street to pay homage to the victims.
The announcement was posted on the "Francophones à San Francisco" Facebook page. As expected, comments of solidarity and sympathy flooded the page.
"Je suis Nice," wrote some, echoing the phrases, "Je suis Paris," and "Je suis Charlie."
This will be the third massacre on French soil in recent months. In November 2015, gunmen massacred scores of people in the capital city of Paris. In January, 2 gunmen forced their way into the offices of the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, killing 12.
