SF Jewish Center Increases Security Measures After Fatal Weekend Shootings In Kansas
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Security has been increased at the Jewish Community Center San Francisco (JCCSF) as a precaution following the weekend shootings at Jewish centers in Kansas.
Frazier Glenn Cross, a 73-year-old known white supremacist, has not been formally charged in the shootings that killed two people on Sunday, but prosecutors said they have enough evidence to pursue hate-crime charges against him.
Nathanial Berkson Michelson with the JCCSF said they have no reason to believe that the shooting was anything but an isolated incident; still they are taking some precautions:
"We have heightened security right now and we will be monitoring the situation and making adjustments as more becomes clear," he said.
San Francisco police have also increased patrols of the area. Anna Whitcher was teaching a class at the JCC.
"One of my students said that she had to get the trunk of her car checked. I mean, that's the first time that's ever happened. It puts a lot of things in perspective. I think we have this sense always that it's not happening to us and it could," she said.
Whicther said it won't deter her from using the center or taking her children swimming there.
"I think people who are doing these acts want us to be afraid and they want us to be living in fear. If we don't live that fear, if we keep living our lives how we're living them then I think that sends a message. We're not going to let them control us like that."
