Interstate 580 shooting in Oakland severely injures 2; eastbound lanes blocked for hours

A shooting on Interstate 580 in Oakland Saturday afternoon severely injured two people in a vehicle and led to the closure of all eastbound lanes for hours.

The California Highway Patrol said officers were advised at about 2:11 p.m. of the shooting on eastbound 580 near Seminary Avenue. As officers were heading to the scene, CHP said one of the victims of the shooting call 911 and reported the shooting.

According to the CHP, the driver told officers that he and a female passenger were shot.

The victim drove himself and his passenger to the hospital. The victims were later taken to other hospitals capable of providing a higher level of care, the CHP said. Both victims suffered major injuries, but the female passenger's injuries were life-threatening.

All lanes of eastbound 580 were closed at about 3:08 p.m. and remained closed into the evening. Eastbound traffic was diverted at Seminary Avenue during the closure and because of the ensuing backup, traffic from southbound state Highway 13 was diverted onto westbound 580, away from the scene.

The highway closure lasted until about 10:14 p.m., the CHP said. The southbound Highway 13 transition to eastbound 580 was also reopened and residual delays remained in the area.

There was no suspect information available.
