How One Castro Valley High Grad Is Inching Toward Super Bowl Commercial Stardom
CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) -- It's parents' greatest moments of anticipation: baby's first word.
A Castro Valley High graduate captures this would-be precious moment for a Doritos commercial, landing him a spot among ten finalists in a contest to win $1 million and have the video shown during the Super Bowl.
The thirty second spot "Baby's First Word," shows a baby who is about to mouth his first word. His parents encourage him nearby, before the baby finally blurts out "Doritos!" and a man holding a bag of the chips is revealed hiding in the corner.
Director Ryan Turner, who now lives in L.A., spent $350 filming the commercial in a friend's backyard with producer Ryan Braun, the IndyStar reported.
Turner said the baby was coaxed into saying "Ree-toes" on cue. Another toddler was bribed to say "Do-ree-toes!" to mix in the final soundtrack giving the appearance the gurgling baby was doing all the talking. The toddler was paid a reasonable fee: three handfuls of corn chips.
Turner was one of nearly 5,000 contestants put into the top ten with the help of online voters. If named winner, Turner said he plans to make a movie, after paying all the up-front taxes.
Online voting for the contest ends January 28th.
