Hotel Business Booming In Silicon Valley As Levi's Stadium Gets Set To Open

SANTA CLARA (KCBS) – There is a hotel boom in Santa Clara, with developers grabbing available land, and weekday occupancy and room rates jumping, all in anticipation of the opening of the San Francisco 49ers new home, Levi's Stadium.

The city of Santa Clara has almost 5,000 hotel rooms, but Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews said that's just not enough.

"What's being contemplated right now is up to another 1,200 rooms we're looking at, between the [Joe] Montana and the related projects, which will be rolled out in the next five or so years," he said.

Matthews said Levi's Stadium should be a boon for the entire region.

"All cities around us are looking to build additional hotel capacity, because we just don't have the hotel capacity for what's going to come," Matthews said. "And what's going to come is going to be great. The eyes of the world are going to be on us, with some of the biggest games and biggest events that the world has to offer."

Already on tap for Levi's Stadium – Super Bowl L in 2016, Wrestlemania 31 in March of 2015, and the Pac-12 Football Championship Game later this year in December.

The first event at Levi's Stadium will be a Major League Soccer match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders FC on August 2.

The San Francisco 49ers first home game will be during the preseason on August 17 as the team hosts the Denver Broncos. The 49ers first regular season home game will be on September 14, when they host the Chicago Bears.
