Bat-Wielding 13-Year-Old Called Hero For Foiling Burglar Who Walked Into Antioch Home

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A 13-year-old Antioch boy is being called a hero for his actions that foiled a burglar entering the home where he and his younger siblings were while their mother and adult sister were on an errand.

On Monday at 10:25 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call by Redmond Collins to report a man who had entered his home in the 2100 block of Hamlin Drive, police said.

Redmond and his two younger brothers had been startled by the man who walked right throught their front door which was unlocked, according to police.

"I was, like, 'get out' but he wouldn't leave so the dog came," said 12-year-old Marquis.

The family dog barked and chased the intruder, identified as 39-year-old Terrell Freeman, back out the front door and he closed the door behind him, police said.

However, the man did not leave. After Redmond called 911, he first armed himself with a kitchen knife and then his baseball bat. "I was going to hit him in his head, so he could be unconscious," said Redmond.

"My dog scared him out the first time but then he came back again," said 10-year-old Jonathan. "But we locked everything and was he was trying to bust into the house."

Redmond stood in a batting stance in front of the door until police got there. When officers arrived, they located Freeman standing in the home's front yard, near the front door, police said.

19-year-old sister Jasmine King said she recognized Freeman as the man who apparently had stalked her and followed her home from the bus stop recently. "When I saw the picture, I gasped," she said. "I'm like oh my God, that's the dude I used to see everyday when I went to school."

Police detained and arrested Freeman on suspicion of residential burglary.
