Hit-And-Run Crash Kills Pedestrian In San Francisco's Visitacion Valley

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash Thursday as she ran across Bayshore Boulevard to reach a bus stop, police said.

The woman was hit by a white Dodge Durango as she crossed Bayshore near Visitacion Avenue without using the crosswalk around 11:17 a.m., according to a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department.

The woman was dragged by the vehicle, said Jesus Mojaddedi, who witnessed the crash from a McDonald's across the street.

"Her body was crushed for a good ten, fifteen seconds underneath the car," Mojaddedi told KCBS.

The woman died at the scene, according to authorities.

Her name has not been released. Police say she appeared to be in her 60s.

The sport utility vehicle continued to drive northbound on Bayshore Boulevard, then turned back on Leland Avenue, slowing as it passed the accident scene, police said.

The SUV then sped away southbound on Bayshore.

Mojaddedi and other witnesses flagged down a Brisbane police officer who happened to be at the corner, who then contacted San Francisco police.

This is the sixth pedestrian fatality in San Francisco this year, police said, higher than the murder rate.

San Francisco police have released a video surveillance image of the suspect vehicle in the hit and run collision.

The image, taken from video cameras in the area, shows a white Dodge Durango SUV with a black ski rack on top, as described by witnesses to the collision.

The suspect is described as having short curly hair and light brown skin and is either black with light skin or Hispanic, Officer Albie Esparza of the San Francisco Police Department said.

Bayshore Boulevard was closed from Geneva Avenue to the Highway 101 onramp because of the police investigation.
