Video: Sonoma County 3-Alarm Wildfire Burns Home, Vehicles, 5 Acres Of Tinder-Dry Brush
WINDSOR (CBS SF) -- A 3-alarm fire on the western side of Highway 101 between Windsor and Healdsburg burned at least one home, several vehicles and forced the California Highway Patrol to briefly close the freeway Saturday afternoon.
Sonoma County District Fire Marshal Cyndi Foreman said a passerby called her agency around 1:46 p.m. to report smoke in the area of 11910 Old Redwood Highway near Healdsburg.
"Quickly that report turned into a confirmed structure fire and into the vegetation," she said. "This is a wind-driven fire. We have a wind from the south-southwest that pushed this fire quickly into five acres and actually spotted into the median on the freeway."
At its height, nearly 60 firefighters from surrounding communities, Sonoma County and Cal Fire fought to gain control of the flames. Helicopters also made air drops.
"While we have shaky containment at this time, I say shaky because this wind tends to pick things (embers) up and put them where we don't want them," she said.
Both northbound lanes of Highway 101 reopened after a short closure. Southbound lanes were reopened after about 90 minutes.
No injuries were reported. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
