High Surf Advisory With 20-Foot Waves In Effect For Friday
(CBS SF) -- Thursday's powerful storm is generating big waves along the Bay Area coast, calling for a high surf advisory until 4 p.m. Friday.
A large westerly swell is expected to create 15 to 20-foot waves, with some larger breakers along the beach, according to the National Weather Service.
Mavericks at Half Moon Bay is likely to see some of the largest waves reaching as high as 24 feet during high tide. Ocean Beach could see 17 to 20-foot waves. The tide drops to a 3.03' at 9:04 a.m., then rises to a 4.67' at 2:02 p.m. Friday. Protected coves will likely make the best of the unruly conditions for surfers eager to get in the water, according to Surfline.com.

There is also an increased chance for dangerous rip currents and and beach erosion.
It's extremely dangerous to fish or observe waves from piers or rocks as large waves can suddenly sweep across previously dry areas, the National Weather Service warns, adding that swimming or surfing in these waves can be dangerous for anyone.
