High Speed Chase Ends With CHP Crash
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A high-speed chase ended on the streets of Oakland early Thursday when a California Highway Patrol SUV slammed into a fire hydrant, power pole and several parked cars, authorities said.
CHP Sgt. Joe Azevedo said the incident began around 2:30 a.m. as an attempted traffic stop of a vehicle with expired plates. The vehicle failed to pull over on westbound Interstate Highway 580 near Shaffer Ranch in Dublin and a high-speed chase began.
The high-speed pursuit continued on the highway, at times reaching speeds of over 100 mph.
According to the CHP, the vehicle exited the freeway near MacArthur Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard and traveled along MacArthur.
"A passenger began spraying the CHP units with something that looked like a fire extinguisher," Azevedo said.
The pursuit ended around 2:21 a.m. when the officer lost control of one of the chase vehicles, crashed into a fire hydrant, light pole and three parked cars. Neither of the two officers in the SUV were injured.
The suspect vehicle, described as a four-door sedan, sped away and remained at large.
