Scavenger Hunts Attracts Stoners And Techies With Cannabis, Bitcoin Hidden Giveaways
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The hidden cash treasure hunt that's become popular around the Bay Area is going digital, with a little something for marijuana enthusiasts, too.
The game appropriately recognized by it's Twitter handle @SFHiddenBitcoin will continue around San Francisco for the entire month.
The millionaire behind the account has been going around distributing cards containing .033 of a Bitcoin -- worth about $20. Everyday a new card containing a private key that can be uploaded to a wallet will be hidden in the city.
Just like the original Hidden Cash hunt that started in May, Hidden Bitcoin leaves clues through its Twitter account. Once a wallet is found, it's announced on Twitter and people have to wait till another clue if given.
Another Hidden Cash-type event launched for pot smokers with an inaugural event planned for Saturday, but City of Oakland authorities quickly nixed the idea.
Hosting such a hunt where medical marijuana is the prize would categorize the hunt as a dispensary business according to a statement on Bay Area Quest Hunt's website. But the group said that's not the case.
"We wanted this hunt to serve the medical marijuana community, and so we chose prizes that would appeal to the community," according to the group's website. "We did not know that we would be treated as a medical marijuana business by the city."
The original plan was to charge medical marijuana card holders $35 to join the Bay Area Quest Hunt. Fifty cards would then be hidden around Oakland with lucky winners able to redeem them for marijuana goodies varying from edibles to concentrates.
But the organizers aren't backing down. There have plans to reschedule the Cannabis Scavenger Hunt for a later date, according to the website, adding that "We want to work with the city in order to make this event happen for the medical marijuana community."
