HelloFlo Viral Ad May Be A Sign Of Things To Come For Marketing
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- It's an ad taking the Internet by storm. In just the past five days, more than 18 million people have watched an ad for something a lot people don't really want to talk about.
The two-minute commercial for HelloFlo, a period supplies company, is titled "First Moon Party" and chronicles a mother, daughter war over the young girl's supposed period.
All of her friends got it, and she wants it too. So, the girl fakes it with a bottle of red nail polish, but mom knows she's being played.
"I was dying laughing. I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen," said Kristin Bunn.
"Girls actually go through that, and it was real," said Therese Perez.
"I think it's really good and they should have more ads like it," said Brooke Bunn.
Michal Strahilevitz PhD, an advertising expert at Golden Gate University said about the ad, "It's the reality of a what a period is like, what a period looks like, how embarrassing it is to talk about it with her mother."
Advertising executives told KPIX 5 that we should all expect to see more web commercials like these because what you can get away with online won't fly on TV.
"But what you see on television isn't going to go viral. Because if you just tell me the product works well, it's priced well, I'm not going to forward that to my friends," Strahilevitz said.
