Late-Summer Bay Area Heat Wave Triggers Spare The Air Day
KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.
Q: Hey Roberta, heard we are heating up this week. Mike Dyson; Moraga
A: That's an understatement!
The first prolonged heat waved is here. Considering we are in the thrust of a drought, we have been pretty lucky this past summer. No prolonged heat waves. We have had a couple of hot days in a row, maybe even three. But this week will take its toll on people, pets and property. If you haven't completely lost your lawn yet, you will.
An off shore flow is in effect and high temperatures will flirt with 100 degrees on Monday and will surely exceed 100 from Tuesday through Saturday. This becomes dangerous for people with outdoor jobs. We need to be mindful of our pets and the elderly. And never, ever leave a child or pet in an unattended car and any amount of time!
On Tuesday, September 8 we will have a "Spare The Air Day" here in the Bay Area. Unhealthy particulate matter (PM) will be present especially in the East and South Bay. I suspect we will encounter a "Spare The Air Day" each day through Friday. You have been warned. It's never a good thing to see the air that we breathe.
So while on this last hurrah holiday marking the unofficial end to our summer season, summer will continue in vengeance and a blast of hot dirty air will be with all of us until at least Saturday.
Let's do our part to conserve energy, take public transit if possible and be a little bit kinder and more patient with one another when feeling hot under the collar.
I would love to hear from you! Please send weather questions, observations and photos to me, Gonzales@kpix.cbs.com and I look forward to hearing from you!
