Hearse Carrying Murder Victim Involved In Oakland Crash During Funeral Procession

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A hearse carrying a homicide victim was involved in an accident during a funeral procession in Oakland Tuesday afternoon.

Two ambulances responded to the accident in the area of West MacArthur Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Way shortly after 1 p.m., according to the Oakland Fire Department.

The hearse was carrying 22-year old Isiah Sudan as his family and friends were heading from the funeral home to the cemetery for his burial when the crash happened.

At least two vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver of the second car, who did not want to be named, said he had a green light as he entered the intersection.

"It's a green light, so I'm going through the intersection.  I see a hearse come out going on Martin Luther King. I slam on the brakes and hit the front end of the car," he said.

He said 40 upset members of the Sudan's family approached him after the crash, saying he was texting, and caused the crash.  He said he understood their pain.

"I have condolences for that family. I truly genuinely apologize to that family, but I don't think I'm in the wrong in this situation."

The driver of the hearse was hospitalized after the crash.
