All-Clear After Shell Martinez Refinery Incident Prompts Health Advisory

MARTINEZ (CBS SF) – Authorities announced an "all-clear" after an incident at the Shell Refinery in Martinez early Friday morning prompted a health advisory.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff lifted the advisory around 9:45 a.m., more than seven hours after the incident was reported.

A refinery official told KPIX 5 that the advisory stems from an "upset" resulting from a "non-standard operating procedure" around 2:30 a.m.

The impacted area included parts of Martinez and Pacheco north of Pacheco Boulevard and west of Interstate 680 near the refinery.

The refinery declared a "Level 2" advisory, which meant individuals with respiratory sensitivities in the affected area could have experienced eye, skin, nose or throat irritation.

A shelter in place was not ordered.
