Hayward Mobile Home Resident Killed In Overnight Trailer Park Fire
HAYWARD (KCBS) — Fire officials are investigating a fire at a mobile home in an unincorporated area of Hayward in which a man was killed Friday morning, an Alameda County fire spokeswoman said.
A report of a fire at a single-wide mobile home in the 20600 block of Fuchsia Court, between Mission Boulevard and the overhead BART tracks, in area known as Cherryland came in shortly after 3 a.m., fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.
Firefighters arrived to find the home heavy involved and forced entry inside and found the victim, who was already dead, five to ten feet from the exit, Knowles said.
The blaze was knocked down about 20 minutes later and contained to the mobile home, according to Knowles.
There are about 20 mobile homes set back from the street and fire officials said that it is not unusual for the units to be fully engulfed by the time they arrive because of the small size.
No other residents were located in the home, she said.
A tearful neighbor, who said her name was Cynthia, stood by, at dawn, after placing flowers as close to the burned-out mobile home as firefighters would allow.
"I didn't know at that time if he made it out alive or not and I heard the fire detectors going off; so I was praying that he did because I was hoping it woke him up but I guess it didn't," she said.
Investigators from the fire department and Alameda County Sheriff's Office have responded to the scene, Knowles said.
