Hayward Burglary Suspects Open Fire On Police; Search For Armed Suspect In Oakland
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- One man was in custody early Tuesday and an intense search was underway for a second after burglary suspects opened fire on Hayward police and then were pursued into an Oakland neighborhood, authorities said.
The incident began with a reported burglary near Cabot Blvd and Winton at 12:45 a.m. in an industrial part of the city.
Arriving officers confronted the suspects, who allegedly opened fire on police as they fled the scene. That set into motion a chase that ended at Bancroft Avenue and 108th on the San Leandro-Oakland border.
It was unclear as of late Tuesday morning if officers fired back.
Both suspects attempted to flee on foot. One suspect had been taken into custody and a search was underway for the second.
Hayward Police Sgt. Ryan Sill said officers were searching in Oakland in the area of Bancroft Avenue and Link Street for the suspect who they presume is armed.
Police from Oakland and Fremont -- along with the Hayward SWAT team -- were assisting in the search.
An expansive perimeter has been set up in the search and is causing a lot of annoyance for local drivers due to closed-off streets in the area.
Police said Bancroft Avenue has reopened as of about 12 p.m., but Link Street was still closed. Police have not said when they plan to reopen this area.
No officers or residents were injured in the incident.
