Hayward Burglary Suspect Captured After Police Chase

HAYWARD (CBS SF) - An Oakland man was arrested after he and two others were interrupted attempting to break into a Hayward motorcycle dealership and leading police on a chase in a stolen U-Haul truck, authorities said.

Hayward police Sgt. Ruben Pola said officers responded to a 911 call and an alarm at East Bay Motorsports on Foothill Blvd. around 3:27 a.m. Wednesday. Three men were using sledgehammers, attempting to smashed their way into the dealership.

Arriving officers, spotted the U-Haul with four suspects inside and gave pursuit. The driver of the stolen box truck crashed into a Hayward patrol car and then headed to northbound Highway 880.

The chase continued into Oakland, authorities said, where the truck stopped near 12th and Willow and the suspects fled on foot.

The driver -- identified as a 20-year-old Oakland man -- was taken into custody. The other suspects remain at large.

Pola said the Oakland man -- whose name was not released -- was being held on assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, resisting arrest with a vehicle and failure to yield to an officer charges.

No injuries were suffered during the pursuit.
