Wind-Driven Wildfires Near Byron 85% Contained

BYRON (CBS SF) – A series of wind-driven fires burning in eastern Alameda and Contra Costa counties since Wednesday afternoon are 85 percent contained as of Thursday morning, according to Cal Fire.

The seven fires, collectively referred to as the Grant Fire by Cal Fire officials, were first reported around 1 p.m. Wednesday in the vicinity of West Grant Line and Mountain House roads in Alameda County and near Camino Diablo in Contra Costa County.

Winds in the area on Wednesday evening were estimated at 30-40 mph, Cal Fire officials said.

A couple of outbuildings have been destroyed but no injuries have been reported, according to Cal Fire.

"We are dealing with what we call rollout or hot spots of material that tend to flare up with the wind get in them," said CalFire Battalion Chief Jonathan Cox

Thursday, the flames were mostly out, leaving behind just debris and smoldering, charred fields.

Firefighters are keeping an eye on the smoldering land and are ready should the high winds and dry brush fuel any more flames.

"This is a good reminder for people that fire season is here. Its time to clear the brush around structures so that if a fire does occur around your home, your home has a chance of surviving," said Cox.
