Google Reportedly Merging Android, Chrome OS

MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) – Google's Android operating system, which is used to run smartphones and other mobile devices, will soon operate personal computers, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the Mountain View-based tech giant will merge its Chrome OS, which is used in Chromebook laptops, with Android.

Sources familiar with the matter said the single operating system will be unveiled in 2017.

With the merge, PC users would gain access to the Google Play store.

Android has been incredibly successful for Google, powering more than one billion smartphones, along with tablets, smartwatches and car infotainment systems. Meanwhile, Chrome OS is used in less than 3 percent of PC's, the Journal reported.
