Google Proposes New Plans For 600,000 Square Foot Futuristic Domed Campus Addition
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS/AP) -- Google has introduced a new proposal for expanding its Mountain View headquarters after city officials rejected most of its earlier proposal for a canopied campus addition.
The company filed plans on Friday to build a 600,000-square-foot translucent domed building on a site it leases from the city near the current Googleplex.
The project would have its own water treatment plant and include a nature path open to the public, a small plaza with stores and kiosks, and work spaces on outdoor movable decks.
Google had hoped to build a similar, but much larger project in another part of the city. But with space for office development running out, the city council instead opted in early May to give much of the remaining square footage to LinkedIn.
Google's pre-existing lease on the property that was not part of its original proposal gave the company a "trump card" to play.
