Gilroy Costco Customers May Have Been Exposed To Measles

GILROY (CBS SF) -- Customers at a Costco store in Gilroy may have been exposed to measles.

A notice from the Santa Clara County Health Department is posted outside and within the store on 7251 Camino Arroyo.

Store officials confirmed that hundreds customers who were in the store on January 18th between 4 and 6 p.m. may have been exposed.

The measles outbreak in California has now totaled at least 80 confirmed cases, including at least nine in the Bay Area.

One of the two confirmed cases in Santa Clara County visited the Gilroy Costco last Sunday. The person was infectious at the time, according to the health department.

Shoppers Sunday were caught off guard by the news.

"We always go there every Sunday and it was very shocking because, I mean, we heard about the measles outbreak and we didn't think it would come down here to Gilroy," said shopper James Tubbs.

"It's kind of mind-boggling that you can go into Costco to get groceries and get measles," said another shopper.

The health department urges anyone at the store during that two-hour period to check their vaccination status for measles and to watch closely for any symptoms up until February 8th.

Officials said it's now safe to be at the Costco, and just wants people who were there at that time to be aware of the situation.
