Garbage Truck Driver Trapped After Crashing Into Utility Pole In San Leandro
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A garbage truck driver was trapped in the truck after crashing into a utility pole and bringing down power lines Monday morning in San Leandro, a fire spokeswoman said.
Firefighters responded to the corner of Davis Street and Doolittle Drive at 9:05 a.m., Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.
The Waste Management truck driver was trapped inside the truck's cab and live wires were hanging in the area. PG&E crews responded to secure the lines and the driver was then extricated from the truck.
The driver was not injured but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Knowles said.
San Leandro police said roads are closed around the intersection and are expected to remain closed until early this afternoon.
The crash caused 458 PG&E customers to lose power. As of about 10:45 a.m., all but 100 customers had their power restored but PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said there is no estimate yet for when those remaining customers will be restored.
Sarkissian said that anyone who sees downed power lines should avoid them and call 911 and PG&E immediately.
