Funeral Held For Oakland Teen Allegedly Killed By Brother

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) – A funeral was held Friday for an Oakland teen mother who was fatally shot, allegedly by her 14-year-old brother over an argument over laundry. Meanwhile, the suspect was able to attend.

People were dressed in coral at the Oakland Senior Center in honor of 17-year-old Justice Toliver, who was killed at the family's apartment in Chinatown on January 23rd. Her brother has been charged with four counts, including Justice's murder, in juvenile court.

Angenett Toliver, the mother of Justice and the suspect, read a brief statement to reporters on Friday. "I am speaking for my entire bloodline. We apologize from the bottom of our hearts for anything and everything that we have done to any living or deceased person, please forgive us," she said.

Toliver did not take questions about the charges that landed her son in juvenile court.

"My daughter is lifeless, not because of kids killing kids; the issue is bigger than that. Its guns and violence," Angenett Toliver said.

The 14-year-old was able to attend his sister's funeral. KPIX 5 learned the move was approved by a juvenile court judge, as long as he was accompanied by a probation officer.

Angenett Toliver was also allowed leave from incarceration on fraud charges to attend the funeral.

"And let's not sweep under the rug, the persons who think its okay to put weapons in the hands of our children with no regards. That's the issue," she said.

Justice's brother hid from authorities for nearly a week before turning himself in. His family has not talked about where he was during that time.
