Fremont Police Say Home Invasion, Rape Suspect May Be Connected To More Sexual Assaults; Will Check DNA Database
FREMONT (KCBS) — After Fremont police arrested a man on Sunday for allegedly breaking into a home, tying up a mother and daughter and raping one of them, they said they will run a DNA sample through a database to find out if he may be connected with other sexual assaults.
Jamala Morris, 34, was arrested only hours after he allegedly broke into a neighboring apartment, tied up a teenage girl with duct tape, sexually assaulted her mother at gunpoint, stole the woman's wallet and fled, according to police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
Police eventually found video surveillance that pointed to Morris. He lives in the same apartment complex as the victims and was arrested.
"He was well equipped. He had items with him and he was prepared for this. He had a firearm, he had duct tape, he was masked and gloved up, he had thought about this," Bosques said.
A short time later, a male resident arrived home and the suspect fled. Police, however, were able to use video surveillance to track down 34-year-old Jamala Morris at his Fremont home. They said they recovered items there that linked him to the crime and that he later confessed to it.
"This is that person who we all fear, that we know is out there. And this person was living in our community and it's very scary," Bosques said.
Morris has prior felony convictions and was on felony probation at the time. He now faces several charges including: rape, kidnapping, robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
