Update: Suspect Arrested for Fremont Hotel Bomb Threat; Suspicious Bag Rendered Safe

FREMONT (CBS SF) – Police have arrested a suspect after a Fremont hotel was evacuated following the reported bomb threat Friday morning.

According to Fremont Police, a suspicious bag was discovered at the Hyatt Place hotel on the 3100 block of West Warren Avenue. About 70 guests inside the hotel were safely evacuated as a precaution.

Police said the ramp from southbound Interstate 880 to West Warren Avenue has been closed.

At 11:20 a.m., Fremont Police posted on the department's Twitter account that a suspect was in custody in connection with the suspicious package. Police said the suspect was a 26-year-old male known to police.

The suspect was taken into custody not far from the hotel, police said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., Fremont police confirmed that the Alameda County Sheriff's Office bomb squad had rendered the bag safe. West Warren Avenue was reopened and guests were allowed to return to the hotel.

Police also confirmed the identity of the man arrested as 24-year-old Fremont resident Varun Suresh. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail for making a false bomb threat, criminal threats and burglary.

The hotel's parking lot was the scene of a fatal officer-involved shooting around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, but there is no indication currently that the two incidents are related.
