Fremont Attempted Burglary Suspect Caught On Surveillance Camera
FREMONT (CBS SF) -- Police were trying to identify a suspect who attempted to burglarize a home and a car in Fremont on Friday afternoon.
Video footage captured by a home surveillance system showed a male suspect trying to burglarize a vehicle and home on Totem Court around 2:15 p.m. Friday, police said.
The suspect was carrying black gloves and a black backpack, according to police. Investigators believe he is associated with a small gold SUV seen driving in the area of Totem Court.
Private surveillance cameras have grown in popularity according to Fremont Police, with businesses, homeowners and entire neighborhoods banding together to set up camera systems.
"Everybody is talking about video surveillance cameras," Geneva Bosques of the Fremont Police Department told KPIX 5. "And it's really because of the success that some of our residents in Fremont have had."
Fifteen months ago, residents who live near Scott Creek Road chipped in to buy a camera system, which captures every car that comes into the neighborhood. The images are then fed into residents' laptops, tablets and smartphones.
"We were getting a break-in every month and a half or so," said resident Ron Douglass. "The last 15 months we've only had one, last month. And the person was caught mainly because of the surveillance cameras that we have."
"Crime is still out of control and people are trying to take their own responsibilities," said Chuck Wall, a former San Jose police officer who runs a private security company with his son, Brian.
Wall, who remotely monitors his home with a high-end system, said having the evidence makes or breaks the typical burglary case.
"Unless there's an injury, unless there's a weapon involved, they don't have the time and those cases are just filed away. But with a photograph, that increases the chances of your property being returned and the suspect being arrested," Wall told KPIX 5.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Fremont police Detective Jacob Blass at Jblass@fremont.gov or call (510) 790-6900.
