Freeze Warning, Black Ice, Cold Overnight Temperatures

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning covering the San Francisco shoreline, the East Bay Hills and the Diablo Range, East Bay and North Bay interior valleys, and parts of Sonoma County, San Jose County and Monterey County.

Overnight and early morning temperatures will range from the mid-20s to the lower 30s.

The warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday.

Several Bay Area homeless shelters have been asked to open up extra beds because anybody sleeping outdoors faces a serious risk of hypothermia. Animals and livestock are also at risk.

Crops could be hit hard as well, since sub-freezing conditions can destroy sensitive vegetation.

Officials were warning residents and drivers to be especially cautious due to the cold overnight temperatures. Saturday morning some residents woke up with frozen water pipes, and there was black ice on some East Bay roads.
