Former KPIX Anchor Dana King Running For Oakland City Council Seat

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Former KPIX-5 news anchor Dana King, who left the station in 2012, has taken out papers to run in November for an open seat on the Oakland City Council.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, King is seeking to replace Pat Kernighan, who is retiring after nine years on the council.

"I'd been working on issues in the neighborhood for a while," King told the newspaper on Tuesday. "When I heard Pat was retiring, it just came in a flash: 'I can do this.' "

After leaving the news business, the 53-year-old King lived on her houseboat in Sausalito, before taking up residence in Oakland's San Antonio neighborhood, which is part of Kernighan's district.

She has been keeping very busy, working on her sculpture art, teaching journalism at Dominican University in San Rafael, and volunteering with the Alameda County Probation Department.

King told the Chronicle she feels the San Antonio neighborhood is "about to explode"

The Second District represents areas not only the San Antonio neighborhood, but also the Trestle Glen area, Lake Merritt and Chinatown.

Right now, the only other candidate to declare is Sokhom Mao of the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Commission and the Oakland Citizens' Police Review Board.
