Fleeing Suspect Shoots At CHP After Vallejo Traffic Stop

VALLEJO (CBS SF) - Police are investigating a shooting at two California Highway Patrol officers stemming from a traffic stop in Vallejo early Sunday morning, a police lieutenant said.

Officers responded to a request by the California Highway Patrol in Solano to assist in a search for a man who fled from authorities around 12:50 a.m., Lt. Herman Robinson said.

Two CHP officers conducted a traffic stop on a gray Buick Park Avenue north of a Chevron gas station at 199 Lincoln Road West just west of the westbound Interstate Highway 80 off-ramp, Robinson said.

The driver of the Buick, later identified as Derrian Williams, fled by foot from the officers as they attempted to detain him, he said.

The officers were unable to catch Williams and spoke with his passenger who was still in the Buick where they heard about five or six gunshots fired in their direction, Robinson said.

The rounds passed the officers in close proximity and struck the dirt behind them near the Magazine Street overcrossing at Highway 80, according to Robinson.

A perimeter was set up by officers from the CHP, Solano County Sheriff's Office and Vallejo and American Canyon police departments but they were unable to find Williams, he said.

He was later found in a home in the 1000 block of Fifth Street, according to Robinson.

Williams, 25, was arrested by the CHP on suspicion of resisting arrest and traffic violations, Robinson said.

Officers determined that Williams was not involved in the shooting, he said.

Neither CHP officer was injured by the gunfire, Robinson said.
