Fire Crews Douse 4-Alarm Blaze In Alamo Square

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A 4-alarm fire in San Francisco's Alamo Square neighborhood Saturday afternoon is under control, a fire dispatcher said.

Fire crews were responding to a report of a fire in the 1500 block of McAllister Street near Scott Street shortly before 1:30 p.m., the dispatcher said. The intersection is located about a block north of Alamo Square Park.

According to fire officials, the blaze broke out in the bedroom in an apartment situated on the second floor of a 3-story Victorian. The fire spread to the attic space in 3 neighboring apartment buildings.

San Francisco police Officer Grace Gatpandan said the immediate area was evacuated and no injuries were reported as of 2:05 p.m. One firefighter was hospitalized for exhaustion.

The blaze was under control shortly after 2:30 p.m., the dispatcher said.

Fire officials describe the damage as "considerable." They are still trying to find out how the blaze got started.

The Red Cross was helping to find shelter for about 24 tenants displaced by the fire.

This was the third large fire in San Francisco in just 4 days.
